(Yasuo
Shinozaki)
Ahead of Valentine’s Day, three pieces from
the Romantic period classical music are on the menu for the opening concert in
the KZNPO Summer Season, taking place in the Durban City Hall tomorrow
(February 13) at 19h30.
Japanese maestro Yasuo Shinozaki conducts
two concert staples by Romantic composer #Brahms, either side of Rachmaninoff’s
Piano Concerto.
Brahms was a German composer pianist and
conductor of the #Romantic period. His music is known for its meticulous
structures and deeply romantic motifs. His Tragic Overture and Symphony No 4
are both on the programme. Fellow composer from the Romantic period, this time
from Russia, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s iconic Piano Concerto No 2 in C minor, will
be played by leading SA concert pianist, Francois du Toit, under the baton of
Yasuo who returns for the third concert of the season on February 27.
The second concert for the season on February
20 is a Valentine’s Variety Spectacular. American conductor William Eddins
shares the spotlight with two guest soloists, the Montenegrin guitarist Goran
Krivokapic and the gifted young South African soprano, Zandile Mzazi, who join
the orchestra in performing a richly curated programme of concert bon-bons by
Schubert, Rodrigo, Mascagni, Massenet, Verdi, Elgar and Tchaikovsky.
“We are delighted to launch our 2020 World
Symphony Series with a remarkable line-up of international and South African
guest stars gracing our roster, who are set to join us in ensuring we bring our
patrons the finest possible concert-going experience,” says KZN Philharmonic
Artistic Director and Chief Executive, Bongani Tembe.
“We encourage our regular supporters to
introduce the joy of live music to family and friends. Particularly as our
programmes include an engaging mix of well-loved works along with less familiar
repertoire, which we know you will enjoy discovering!” he adds.
The concerts take place in the Durban City
Hall at 19h30.
