D’LOVERLEY

(Helene Joseph & Melvin Peters)

Rhumbelow Theatre at Tina’s Hotel in Kloof will present jazz pianist Melvin Peters and vocalist Helene Joseph in a show called D’Loverley which will run from March 13 to 15.

This is a delightful show that explores and focuses primarily on the music of Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and others. The tunes are timeless gems which are tastefully packaged into the form of a musical journey or a trip down memory lane.

Peters and Joseph are well-known artists in their own right. They have developed a wonderful musical rapport and synergy, given that their association spans a few decades, having first worked together some 30 years ago.

Joseph, a highly respected vocalist, has a wealth of experience of performing on stage, as well as recently on cruise ships across the world. This is a welcome return to Durban - she last appeared in 2012 with Luciano Zuppa in a show called Twice as Nice presented by Rhumbelow Durban.

Peters has achieved much acclaim as a jazz pianist, church organist, educator and jazz clinician. He is accomplished, versatile and is comfortable within most music genres. He has performed with several South African jazz artists, including Gloria Bosman, Tandie Klaasen and Abdullah Ibrahim. Furthermore, he has had several opportunities to perform abroad, most recently in Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Musically, the show is rich in variety, covering several jazz genres across the spectrum. The entertainment value is high and audiences can expect to be treated to some high energy swing tunes, soulful ballads and laid back Latin American numbers. The beautiful combination of the deep, sultry voice of Helene Joseph and the sparkling tinkling of the ivories by Melvin Peters should have the audience enthralled from start to finish.

D’Loverley takes place on Friday and Saturday at 20h00 and on Sunday at 13h45. (The Sunday show starts earlier to accommodate loadshedding at 16h00). The theatre venue opens 90 minutes before show for drinks
