CENTRE FOR JAZZ ONLINE CONCERT: APRIL 8, 2020


The Online Concert from the Centre for Jazz on Wednesday April 8, 2020, will feature Lindi Ngonelo, The VCU Africa Combo/UKZN Storytellers and Mbijana Sibisi.

UKZN Alumni Lindi Ngonelo features with a performances that took place at Seaman's Corner in Hammarsdale on December 29, 2018.

On the bandstand is Mxolisi Mdlalose (tenor sax), Siyanda Zulu (trumpet), Riley Giandhari (drums), Freeman Gumede (bass) and Lindi Ngonelo (piano), who heads up the quintet. The first composition is titled Hymn for Them whose sole intention was to cherish and show love and appreciation to her parents for everything they had done for her, while they were still alive. The song holds even more meaning now than before, as her father passed on in 2018.

The second song is titled The Beginning which features Mbuso Khoza who is recognised as a gem in the style of indigenous African music.

VCU Africa Combo and University of KwaZulu-Natal Jazz Storytellers Ensemble (Durban) perform It Just is (Yiqiniso) and Brotherrelation which was presented at the UKZN Jazz Centre on March 10, 2015.

This was part of an exchange programme between UKZN and VCU Jazz Studies. Personnel include Kwena Elvis Ramahuta (voice), Rogan van den Berg (guitar), Lungelo Ngcobo (piano), Dalisu Ndlazi (bass), Jude Ganasen(drums), and UKZN’s Burton Naidoo (piano)with director Neil Gonsalves (piano); and Trey Sorrells (alto sax), Cody Reifsteck (tenor sax),Roger Pouncey Jr (guitar), Ryan Moses (piano),Jordan Mason (bass), and Cleandré Foster (drums)
with director Prof. Antonio Garcia (trombone).

Mbijana Sibisi will share his stories. His music can be described as a mixture of storytelling and Zulu folk sound. He considers himself as a social commentator and aims to be the voice of the people, using his music to spread real-life stories about happiness, but also touching on societal issues.

A qualified dental nurse, Sibisi gave up his job in 2013, at the age of 22, to become a full-time musician. His career has taken off since then with performances throughout South Africa, but also in Belgium, France, Spain, Uganda and Reunion Islands. In 2016 he entered The Voice and in the same year released his first EP titled History. He is currently working on an album which he plans to release later in the year.
