WAR PARTY: REVIEW

This is a read worth taking on, the adage “Ignorance is bliss” is not to be excused. To be recommended for senior scholars and avid readers alike. (Review by Christine E Hann)

War Party How the ANC’s political killings are breaking South Africa by Greg Ardé is a work of non-fiction, set mainly in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, and is a book written in three parts – The Killing Fields of KZN, Taxi Violence, and The City and The Party.

The author weaves a story which explains to the reader in a clear, easy-to-read style, that all three parts are inter-linked to the main theme of the book – how the ANC’s political killings are destroying South Africa, its economy and its people.

Ardé is a journalist based in Durban, South Africa. He started his career at the Daily Dispatch, and has worked for the South African Press Association, the Daily News, The Mercury, the Sunday Tribune and the Sunday Times. Since 2015, he has edited various magazines, written three biographies, and contributed to a range of publications. He writes mainly about social and business matters.

I know the author to be a good journalist and a decent man, but what to say about the book? It is well-written, researched, interesting and insightful. “Did I really want to know this?” was the question that kept going through my mind as I read the book. As a South African, I know that corruption is rife. “Eating from the trough” abounds as the author says. But to this degree and level! And interconnected in a multitude of ways across the levels as well!

The book ends with the author’s note and refers to a fable attributed to the Cherokee Indian tribe of North America. That of two wolves that exist within every person: one wolf is good, and the other is evil. The fight between these two wolves exists within us all, the winner being “The one you feed.” To quote the author, “At the risk of being facile, let me say it is becoming.” No … rather, you read the book, and see for yourself.

I shall view my fellow countrymen with a more discerning eye now. I am certainly better informed. This is a read worth taking on, the adage “Ignorance is bliss” is not to be excused. To be recommended for senior scholars and avid readers alike.
