MYSTERIES OF THE MIND

Brendon Peel’s form of mentalism will leave you intrigued, astounded, and well entertained. (Review by Keith Millar)

Live Theatre is back! It is the second week of activity at Durban’s innovative Rhumbelow Theatre. And it really is a kind of magic.

And it is in every sense of the word as appearing at the venue for this week-end only is leading South African Magician and Mentalist, the urbane Brendon Peel, with his show, Mysteries Of The Mind.

In recent years, magic shows - helped in no small way by television talent shows - have moved beyond the mere pulling of rabbits out of hats or endless strings of ribbons out of mouths, and have become a much more sophisticated form of entertainment.

Brendon Peel certainly falls into that category. Whereas the above tricks were already enough to confuse some of us, his form of mentalism will leave you intrigued, astounded, and well entertained.

Peel is a genial and equable young man, a veritable boy next door, who delivers a performance which is full of easy-going wit and charm.

But be aware, if his show is anything to go by, he is able to put thoughts into your head or read your mind.

Whether it’s using cards or dice, he is always able to correctly predict what the audience will randomly select.

He also astounds by solving a Rubik Cube Puzzle (54 quintillion combinations according to him) in record time while blindfolded and then another one while it is covered by a dish cloth just by stroking it.

Peel, who originally hails from Port Elizabeth, started doing magic at the age of nine. He has been performing professionally since 2011 and has performed along the length and breadth of South Africa as well as touring internationally and making many TV appearances. His Britain's Got Talent audition went viral with over 10 million people worldwide witnessing the act.

With plenty of audience participation and interaction (well-handled with due deference to social distancing requirements), Peel offers a well-structured, interesting, and entertaining show.

So put a little magic into your life and get to the Rhumbelow Theatre this week-end for a dose of enjoyable live theatre.

The Rhumbelow Theatre has gone to great lengths to ensure that it meets all the Covid Lockdown protocols in order to operate comfortably and safely. The venue is certainly worth a visit to enjoy the thrill of live theatre once again.

There are two performances of Mysteries Of The Mind left. Today at 19h00 and on Sunday at 14h00.

“Whilst we are not changing our 2020 pricing, we would ask that if you are able to please assist us and the performers by donating a higher ticket price,” says Rhumbelow Theatre’s director, Roland Stansell.
