THE ULTIMATE COUNTDOWN: REVIEW

(Andrew Webster)

Excellent entertainment for the price. I found it to be cheerful and entertaining way to spend an hour. (Review by Keith Millar)

For everyone who has been missing their dose of light music entertainment during the lockdown, this is for you.

In their first online show the Rockwood Theatre, Sibaya has produced The Ultimate Countdown, a marvellous collection of 23 of the most popular songs from their musical shows from the past three years.

The production features a stellar cast which includes musicians such as John Ellis on electric and acoustic guitar, Shelds Von Grimm on electric guitar, Lloyd De Gier on bass and Dillan Kanny on drums.

Taking on the duties of compere/host and lead male vocalist is the owner of the Rockwood Theatre, Andrew Webster. He is joined on vocals by fabulous Marion Loudon, Jemma Badenhorst, Jessica Laws and Jean Citto. Adding a bit of extra glamour are dancers Savana De Almedia and Lindsley Augus.

The songs come from hit shows such as Juke Box Hits, Nothing but the 90s, Rocking World Tour and Hollywood Hits and are presented with all the usual Rockwood energy, sparkle, and high octane moves.

The costumes are spectacular, the sound and lighting are top class and there are plenty of additional visuals to enhance the experience of the show.

The playlist of songs is dazzling and are performed with aplomb by the various vocalists. Included is Lady Gaga’s Shallow from the movie A Star Is Born, Cher’s Believe, Mariah Carey’s Without You, Chuck Berry’s Johnny Be Good, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts’ I Love Rock 'n' Roll, Robbie Williams Let Me Entertain You, Bob Marley’s Three little Birds, Prince’s Purple Rain (my favourite sung by John Ellis and also with a fantastic guitar solo), and many more.

To produce Ultimate Countdown, Rockwood Theatre teamed up with online production and streaming company, DigiTV. They used six cameras along with overlays, lighting effects and high quality sound in the production of this enjoyable show which was created by Andrew Webster with emotional support by his wife Cindy.

The show is a fundraiser for the theatre’s artists who have not been able to work since March 15, 2020. It will be run on the DigiTV platform on Saturdays and Sundays from September 18 to 27 from 19h00.

Tickets are just R50 and are available from Quicket. (www.quicket.co.za).
