The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (UKZN) and iSupport Creative Business will present the Bass Fundraising Concert featuring 17 bassists who are assisting in raising funds for Life Line Durban.
The online concert will take place as part of the regular Unlocked Music Sessions on October 14, 2020.
Lifeline Durban is a respected and experienced NGO offering professional and confidential counselling services dealing with emotional crisis, trauma, abuse, violence, rape, HIV/AIDS and depression/suicide. For more information go to www.lifelinedurban.org.za

The online experience features Mozambican-born lldo Nandja who is now a steady feature in the Netherlands jazz scene; Durban-born Llewelyn Chetty who is now based in China, and UK-based Deon Krishnan who has toured extensively across Europe and has shared the stage with international stars, notably Dionne Warwick, Jonathan Butler and Hugh Masekela. Also featured will be renowned bassist Lex Futshane who has worked with, amongst others, Winston “Mankunku” Ngozi, Rashied Lanie, Bheki Khoza, Bheki Mseleku, Ezra Ngcukana, Ulrich Sussie and Brice Wassy as well as Living legend Carlo Mombelli who has recorded and performed at many respected festivals, including the Roma Villa Celimontana Jazz Festival, the Stockholm Jazz Festival, the German Moers and Leipzig jazz Festivals, the ‘On the Edge of Wrong’ festival in Norway and the Banlieues Blues festival in Paris as well as the JazzWerkstatt in Bern, to name a few.

Also contributing to this exciting gig is Baba KB Maphumulo of Ukhumbane Jazz Ensemble, “The Queen of Bass” and “The Groove Queen” Aus Tebza; exciting Durban duo The Sound of Ardenne (Simon Hampton and Dan Wilson); Founding member of “Little Giants” Shaun Johannes and Ariel Zamonsky, BandaBanda who both session for a list of South African jazz giants but are also incredible artists in their own right.
This concert is made possible by The SAMRO Foundation/Concerts SA. Concerts SA is a joint South African/Norwegian live music development project housed under the auspices of SAMRO and managed by IKS Cultural Consulting. Concerts SA receives financial, administrative and technical support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, SAMRO and the SAMRO Foundation. Working with musicians, promoters, venue owners and audiences, and providing support to the sector through research and skills development for music professionals, the project aims to build a vibrant and viable live music circuit in southern Africa. It also aims to develop an interest in and appreciation of live music by showcasing music performances and conducting workshops at schools.
