DSTV HIGHLIGHTS NOVEMBER 13 TO 19, 2020

Friends and enemies can come in all shapes and sizes. This week, DStv takes a look at how to decipher which is which. From the devious dealings of chefs working hard to get the apprenticeship of a lifetime in Sjefhuis to animated film Sheep and Wolves: Pig Deal, the lesson is to never judge a book by its cover.

For anyone looking for remarkable television, look no further than the anthology film series Small Axe. Director Steve McQueen is no stranger to daring approaches to racial intolerance, with his repertoire of films including the likes of 12 Years a Slave:

“Although all five films take place between the late 1960s and mid-80s, they are just as much a comment on the present moment as they were then. They are about the past, yet they are very much concerned with the present. A commentary on where we were, where we are and where we want to go.”

If you need a little more sunshine in your week, this year’s People’s Choice Awards will be hosted by Demi Lovato and honours Jennifer Lopez and Tyler Perry. The winners in each of the 44 entertainment categories will speak to you no matter your tastes.

Sheep and Wolves: Pig Deal

November 14 on M-Net (DStv Channel 101) at 15h30

Written by the team that brought you The Snow Queen series and Beauty and the Beast comes a fun family film with moral undertones. Dubbed into English, this Russian fantasy-comedy takes elements of the cautionary tale about wolves in sheep’s’ clothing and adds a new narrative. Grey is a vegetarian wolf living an idyllic life where sheep and wolves live in harmony. When newcomers Simone and Josie arrive, their presence becomes delicious news for a rival, carnivorous clan of wolves.

Ford v Ferrari

November 15 on M-Net (DStv Channel 101) at 20h05

Starring hunky Matt Damon and Christian Bale, this movie is based on actual events that occurred around the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1966. Playing race-car drivers Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles respectively, Damon and Bale provide viewers with an inside look at the intense dealings off the track, including corporate interference and revolutionary tactics to try and bend the laws of physics. More than just an adrenaline rush, this movie is an eye-opener to the success of two great car manufacturers.

Small Axe

November 16 on BBC Brit (DStv Channel 120) at 20h00

This British-American anthology series received a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its incredible performances and beautifully layered sense of conviction. The series of films are all directed by Academy Award-winning Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) and share the real-life experiences of London’s West Indian community during the tumultuous era from 1969 to 1982. The themes of police brutality, marginalised voices, and illegal gatherings will resonate strongly with anyone paying attention to global activities. With a cast that includes John Boyega (Star Wars) and Letitia Wright (Black Panther), the first film Mangrove has already received strong praise.
