The Academy Award® and Primetime Emmy® nominated isiZulu film, Yesterday, produced by Anant Singh, directed by Darrell Roodt and starring Leleti Khumalo will be broadcast on World AIDS Day, December 1 2020 at 21h30 on SABC 3.
The film tells the story of Khumalo’s character, Yesterday who faces her positive HIV status with grit and determination. Yesterday focuses on HIV/AIDS, but also addresses gender-based violence. Upon finding out that she had contracted HIV through her mine-worker husband, Yesterday travels to see him at his workplace where she confronts him. He denies his status and attacks her violently in full view of security guards who do nothing to stop him. When her husband becomes seriously ill, Yesterday takes him in and takes care of him in his dying days.
Producer, Anant Singh said, “Yesterday is as relevant today and continues to create greater awareness around HIV/AIDS. It highlights the cause of many rural African women who have become victims of the disease, but continue living their lives with courage. Yesterday’s story, specifically the scene where security guards ignore her being assaulted by her husband, inspired me to create a Gender-Based Violence awareness film. This issue of ‘standbyerism’ contributes to the perpetuation of violence against women.”

Yesterday, acknowledged as a ground-breaking film as it dealt with the social impact of HIV/AIDS, is the first South African film to receive an Academy Award® nomination in the Best Foreign Language category, and the only South African film to be nominated for a Primetime Emmy® award.
