ASSITEJ SA and Achieving Control of Asthma in Children in Africa (ACACIA) in collaboration with the University of KwaZulu-Natal Paediatrics Department have joined forces to present a youth drama highlighting Asthma Awareness. The production is titled – In Control, Reloaded is a project that not only entertains, but educates and empowers the youth.
Written by Nigerian-born playwright Tunde Euba and adapted by Go Durban Academy Head of drama and theatre director, Mthokozisi Zulu, it tells us the story of a 16 year-old girl living with asthma.
The story takes us on Nokuphila’s journey as she tries to balance her health with her favourite sport – soccer. We experience her challenges and obstacles that bring us to the question in the end of the story, is she really in control?
The show ends with a workshop, driven by the cast and it helps unpack this question with the youth, as they interact and communicate directly with them. Clad with physical theatre, music, drama and movement, the stellar cast of Menzi Mkhwane, Thapelo Essau and Thembelihle Ngubo brings youngsters into the world of the asthmatic Nokuphila.
