The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) has taken a proactive stance in undergoing a re-evaluation of its offerings bringing it in line with the needs of the creative sector through focused and relevant programmes.
In 2019, ACT undertook a nation-wide road trip in the form of The ACT Roadshow, to better understand the needs of its stakeholders and the unique challenges and opportunities present in each of the nine provinces.
Following the roadshow, ACT embarked on a full organisational evaluation to determine whether the current programmes and offerings were adjusting to the climate of the arts and culture sector. The evaluation offered incredible insight into the gaps and opportunities within the organisation that could speak directly to bettering the sector.
The organisational evaluation was a well-timed exercise and enabled ACT to build a new, more relevant and flexible five-year strategy that can embrace the current arts environment.
A small live event was hosted at Campbell House in Waverley, Johannesburg on April 16, 2021, to mark the special occasion and to share ACT’s new strategy and programmes with a select group of guests and media. The event will also be live streamed via ACT’s Facebook Page for the broader industry to gain insights into what will be on offer from the Trust. The issues faced by the sector are not only on a monetary level, but also encompass development, capacity building, and access to markets.
To celebrate this event ACT invited two very talented and unique young South African artists to present their work: Busisiwe Mahlangu, winner of the South African National Poetry Prize 2021 and the extraordinarily captivating musician, Tshepang Mogane, recipient of the 2019 ACT | DALRO | Nedbank Scholarship in Music.
This event not only marks a new direction in ACT’s trajectory in the sector but will present an opportunity to develop deeper relationships with its strategic partners and related industry players in creating a more comprehensive and communicative support structure for the sector through understanding each other’s offering and visions.
Marcus Desando, ACT CEO, says: "Seeking and refining a relevant, meaningful and impact-driven mandate has been a key focus of ACT since my appointment as CEO. The launch of this strategy is going to achieve the calibre of outcomes that will make us proud to be part of the cultural and creative industries and more importantly highlight ACT as a positive contributor to advancing the sector. I am looking forward to unveiling what our reimagined purpose and dreams are as an organisation and also how this is going to support the cultural and creative industries in a constructive way.
