ICONS OF MUSIC RETURNS TO HISTORY CHANNEL

Icons of Music returns to the HISTORY® Channel Africa, DStv 186 showcasing renowned musicians from various genres, who, collectively have entertained millions for almost seven decades. These include reggae stalwart Bob Marley and Johnny Clegg, a truly legendary South African muso who used his songs and dance performances as a weapon against the brutal apartheid system.

The stories behind the music air every Saturday at 20h15, from May 1 through to June 5. In addition to Clegg and Marley, each once off special will shine the spotlight on the musical journey of other rock and pop acts, namely Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Ozzy Osbourne and Fleetwood Mac songstress Stevie Nicks.

This documentary explores the life of one of the 20th century’s most charismatic and challenging performers, Bob Marley. He transcends the role of reggae luminary and is widely regarded as an activist and a cultural and music icon.

Ozzy Osbourne: Throne of Darkness

Ozzy Osbourne eats, breathes and lives the typical ROCKSTAR lifestyle! The Prince of Darkness famously got his start in Black Sabbath when he placed an ad in a local music store that read: “Ozzy Zig needs a gig has own PA”. At over 70 years of age, he is still rocking and showing the world the true meaning of ‘being metal’.

Stevie Nicks is the quintessential American rockstar who is best known as Fleetwood Mac’s frontwoman. With her ethereal style and haunting voice, Nicks was the spirit of classic 1970s rock. Even with the trials and tribulations of being a member of Fleetwood Mac, she reigns as one of the most prolific women of music.

Johnny Clegg: The White Zulu

The exceptional story of a committed musician, crazy for dance, who made the world love his vision of a South African culture that allowed everyone, black and white, to express themselves and make it possible to get along. Apartheid was a divisive tool, but Johnny Clegg’s dream sought a way of uniting South Africans by mixing English and Zulu, African rhythms and rock.
