The Playhouse Company in collaboration with the Flatfoot Dance Company presents Seven Ways to Say Goodbye.

In this soulful new work, that forms part of The Playhouse Company’s annual prestigious South African Women’s Arts Festival which is currently running, The Flatfoot Dance Company begins to explore the nature of intimacy. Stepping into the heartland, choreographer Lliane Loots has taken the eight dancers through a journey that ask them (and the audience) to confront the sticky and sometimes porous relationship we have to endings and partings. Set against a time of self-isolation and social distancing, Seven Ways to Say Goodbye confronts human relationships: father to son, mother to daughter, lover to lover, old age to dying, individual to politics in a moving journey to finding self. It confronts the idea that saying goodbye is also about leaving behind that which history binds to us both personally and politically.

In traversing the inner journeys of intimacy, this new dance work is finally a celebration of all that is sacred and beautiful. In a display of gravity-defying dance and embodied story-telling of the intimate and the holy, this production will leave you breathless!

This new dance theatre work has been created by Loots via a very intimate and personal workshopped process with eight of Durban’s gifted contemporary dancers; Sifiso Khumalo, Jabu Siphika, Kristi-Leigh Gresse, Yaseen Manuel, Mthoko Mkhwanazi, Siseko Dube, Ndumiso ‘Digga’ Dube and Sbonga Ndlovu. It features lighting and audio visuals by Wesley Maherry and costume design by Greg King.

Flatfoot Dance Company founder, Lliane Loots holds the positions of Dance Lecturer in the Drama and Performance Studies Programme at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. She has a Masters degree in Gender Studies and completed her PhD in 2018 looking at contemporary dance histories on the African continent. In 2021, FLATFOOT enjoys its 23rd year as one of Durban and South Africa’s most celebrated contemporary dance companies.
