The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra is thrilled to announce our return to live concerts as we present our Special Spring Symphony Concerts on Thursday evenings of October 28 and November 4, 2021, at 19h30 at the Playhouse Opera Theatre. The recent relaxation of COVID-19 regulations has allowed us to do live concerts and our musicians and staff look forward to being together with you again,” says Bongani Tembe, Chief Executive and Artistic Director of the KZNPO.

The orchestra celebrates the return of celebrated conductor Justus Frantz to open the season which will feature one of the world’s most in-demand violinists, Ms Ye-Eun Choi. The programme opens with Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro followed by Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in e minor, and concludes with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in c minor.

The 2nd Special Spring Concert, under the baton of popular conductor Daniel Boico, will feature award winning pianist, Georgy Tchaidze. The evening opens with Karen LeFrak’s Gravity which is followed by Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 6 in D Major rounds off the programme.

“In keeping with COVID-19 regulations, there will be a limited number of tickets available for sale. With this in mind, we realise that we will not be able to offer our loyal subscribers their usual seats, and so we urge you to purchase your tickets as soon as is possible to avoid disappointment,” says Tembe.

Tickets can be purchased online through Quicket or through the KZNPO offices - contact 031 369 9437/8 or email:

“Your safety is of paramount importance to us and all patrons will be subject to COVID screening protocol before entering The Playhouse Opera Theatre. Furthermore, seats have been pre-allocated to allow for social distancing between all members in the audience.

“The KZN Philharmonic is delighted to be hosting live performances again and we look forward to enjoying these two concerts with you,” adds Tembe.

The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra is a not-for-profit company and a public benefit organisation with a committed board of directors consisting of prominent business people and community leaders.

The Orchestra is chaired by business luminary, Saki Macozoma, and ably led for the past 25 years by Bongani Tembe, an accomplished Juilliard School trained singer and distinguished arts manager. Tembe’s strong vision fosters high artistic values and a commitment to engaging with the diverse communities of South Africa.

A comprehensive education, development and community engagement programme exposes more than 30,000 urban and township learners per year to music educational concerts, whilst the Orchestra also spends part of the year in the rural areas working with local schools and communities. In addition, the Orchestra presents its flagship World Symphony Series (WSS), which features four seasons of symphony concerts at the Durban City Hall and the Playhouse Opera Theatre.
