GO BIG!: REVIEW

(Above: Aaron McIlroy & Lisa Bobbert)

Go Big! is tried and tested McIlroy/Bobbert comedy which is so well loved by Durban audiences. So, if you are a super fan it is time to meet them at the Rhumbelow theatre in Umbilo. (Review by Keith Millar)

Going purely on audience response it is obvious that husband and wife team, Aaron McIlroy, and Lisa Bobbert, remain comedy royalty in Durban.

So, the good news for all their fans in that after a successful run at the Northland’s Bowling Club their latest show Go Big! Has been moved to the Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo where there will be shows until Sunday January 9.

The show is directed by Daisy Spencer and features most of McIlroy and Bobbert’s usual tried and tested alter egos.

Husband and wife team, the pushy Charmaine and not-so-bright Bruce start proceedings by showing off the art pieces they have been creating during the lockdown. It is rather fun to see Bruce getting the better of Charmaine for once.

We then meet the Latin American dancing duo with McIlroy as Cornelius incongruously playing a song entitled Made In Japan on the guitar for this Latin segment.

Music plays a big role in this production with songs such as Show Must Go On and Let’s get It Started opening the show.

All played for comedy, they also contribute Fireball, All By Myself and a rather awkward song and dance effort of Time of My Life.

The first half ended with a rather butch yoga teacher Cheryle played by Bobbert taking the audience through their paces.

The second half is dominated by McIlroy’s Indian alter ego Veejay. In a nonsensical rambling tirade, he both amused and insulted his audience in equal measures.

The costumes worn by both artists throughout are rather outrageous and the miniskirts worn for a medley of Abba songs were no different.

As an encore the duo had the audience on their feet to take part in the Time Warp.
