KZNSA is pleased to present Somewhere In Between, an exhibition of new work from South African born artist Jennifer Morrison.
All are welcome to the opening event on Friday, April 8, 2022, at 17h30 for 18h00. The Arts Café will serve dinner from 17h00 to 19h30 - reminder to please BYO alcohol until further notice.
In this series of paintings, Morrison uses the formal qualities of colour and composition to allude to something experienced in the world and in oneself. She has tried to create a space within these works, where you are aware of an unfolding as the final marks sit on top of a series of previous marks. The artist wanted to create a sense of a past; of something which lies behind that which is seen and felt in the present.
For her, painting is about expression. It is about capturing an interior world and a personal response to the world around her. It’s about having faith in not knowing. It is about what is unspoken. Morrison is interested in the literalness of painting. Subject matter, for her, is the least interesting aspect of art. She is far more interested in how a painting is put together; in its visual impact. Paintings are there to be experienced.
These paintings are about entanglement, hope and struggle. They are about trying to capture a moment, a memory, an emotional state which is in a state of flux, as all things are. Morrison sees her paintings as arrangements which try to evoke and describe states of chaos, struggle and aggression alongside those of rest and beauty.
