CHERBIZ: REVIEW

(Left: Anthony Stonier)

Let Anthony Stonier entertain you in his inimitable way, if this show comes to your area. (Review by Caroline Smart)

There’s only one Anthony Stonier – a well-known Durban performer with his own distinctive style of presentation. This he shows to his best in Cherbiz, a new show focusing on the famous singer, Cher.

The show’s subject wasn’t actually of his choice – he was invited to create Cherbiz. Cher is not a performer whose work he usually portrays so it required much surfing on the internet to find out more about this iconic singer. The result offers some fascinating details about Cher and her contemporaries.

Cherbiz & her showbiz friends - Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves is an entertaining delight. Slim, good-looking and a strong presence on the stage performing to some great backing tracks, Stonier is always in tune with the mood of the songs, giving strong meaning to the lyrics. He does justice to Cher’s numbers such as Believe, Burlesque, Gypsies Tramps & Thieves, Dark Lady, Walking in Memphis, Turn Back Time, The Last of Me, and Strong Enough.

He also performs songs by those who appeared on her and her husband’s television programme “Sonny and Cher”.

The show moves comfortably from the humorous Clementine by Bobby Darrin; the easy-going Top of the World by the Carpenters, the soulful Alone Again from Gilbert O’Sullivan, Ben by Michael Jackson (did you know this was a song about a pet rat?), the sadness of Neil Diamond’s You Don’t Bring Me Flowers; Elton John’s sentimental Your Song and Sammy Davis Jr’s fast-paced Wonderful Day.

He pulls out all the stops Shirley Bassey style in Greatest Performance and gives us true Abba-style with Dancing Queen. Then there’s Lady Gaga’s tribute to Sound of Music which she performed at the 2015 Oscars, followed by my favourite, Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina, from Evita.

Let Anthony Stonier entertain you in his inimitable way if this show comes to your area.

There will be a performance of Cherbiz on May 28, 2022, at 19h00 at the Northlands Bowling Club in Durban North.
