As uncomplicated and easy-going as both artists are, they put their heart and souls into their performances and produce an evening of entertainment which is out of the top drawer. (Review by Keith Millar)

Two of Durban’s leading entertainers, elegant keyboardist and singer Evan Cullum and the enchanting Marion Loudon, have teamed up to present a dazzling production honouring the music of Sir Elton John.

Their show is on stage at the Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo which has over the years featured a long list of excellent tributes to wide variety of musical acts.

And in my humble opinion Crocodile Rock ranks amongst the very best seen at this venue.

As uncomplicated and easy-going as both artists are, they put their heart and souls into their performances and produce an evening of entertainment which is out of the top drawer.

Before this show, I must admit to being rather ambivalent about Elton John’s music, but now I am a firm fan.

Always with a ready smile, the amiable Evan Cullum proves to be a very witty host while, as always, Marion Louden oozes charm whenever she is on stage.

Sir Elton John, who turned 75 years old this year, has had a career spanning over five decades and has had 25 top ten singles, most of which are in the show.

In the first half, we heard Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting, Sacrifice, Daniel, Don’t Go Breaking My Heart, Rocketman, Nikita, Sad Songs, Crocodile Rock, and I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues.

In a show such as this it is difficult to pick out highlights, but mention must be made of the three songs towards the end of the show which were performed with only solo piano. They were Candle in The Wind (Cullum), Yellow Brick Road (Loudon) and Your Song (Cullum). These were very moving and highly appreciated by the audience.

Other songs heard in the second half were Bennie and the Jets, Bitch Is Back, Don’t Let the Sun go Down on Me, Something About the Way You Look Tonight. Looking Up and I’m Still Standing.

Crocodile Rock is an admirable tribute to one of the greats of the music industry over the past 50 years. It is performed with great aplomb by two accomplished musicians. If you can get to see this show don’t miss it. I am sure you won’t be disappointed.

The final performance takes place this afternoon at 14h00.  Tickets R160. Booking is essential via roland@stansell.co.za or Computicket. – Keith Millar
