WHEN CONTINENTS COLLIDE: REVIEW

(One of the highly energised numbers. Joint Director Evan Cullum can be seen in the top left of the picture at the keyboards)

This show has all the elements to be a fun, high-spirited party production which is so loved by supporters of this type of supper theatre entertainment - first-rate music, well performed by a talented cast and topped off by a group of sexy dancers. (Review by Keith Millar)

The good news is that another entertainment venue in our beleaguered arts sector has re-opened.

One of the early victims of the Covid pandemic, the now-renamed Sibaya Theatre (used to be Rockwood Theatre) at the Sibaya Casino is back. Under the management of Dingalings Productions.

Their opening offering, When Continents Clash, is a compilation of hits from around the world. And an enjoyable party piece it is with last night’s audience entering into the spirit of the production and having a very good time.

In fact, one can’t help but have a feeling of deja vu on seeing this production. Not in a bad way, but the format is exactly the same as was offered previously at the Rockwood Theatre or at any Barnyard venue.

I say “not in a bad way” because you can’t go wrong with a show headed by the debonair Evan Cullum on keyboards and vocals as well as the fabulous Marion Loudon and Jemma Badenhorst on vocals.

The trio are supported by Paul Cassells on drums, Senzo Mdamba on bass and Chris Brink on guitar, and adding the spice to the whole production are three energetic dancers - Sherwin Green, Martinique Palmer and Kirsty Motzouris.

So, this show has all the elements to be a fun, high-spirited party production which is so loved by supporters of this type of supper theatre entertainment - first-rate music, well-performed by a talented cast and topped off by a group of sexy dancers.

However, it must be said that this was only the third performance of this production, and it is still a little rough around the edges. And that includes sound and, particularly, lighting. But as I said, all the elements are there, and with some polishing, I am sure it will develop into a very good show.

The music is an eclectic choice which represents various continents around the world. Hits from artists such as Sia, Tones and I, ABBA, Adele, Elton John, Rosette, Cher, The Beatles, Billy Joel, Tina Turner, Lady Gaga and Brenda Fassie.

Medleys are the order of the day, so the audience enjoy a huge choice of hit tunes.

Special moments for me were Evan Cullum’s medley of Elton John songs - possibly his speciality as a performer – which included I’m Still Standing, Saturday Nights Alright and Your Song. I also enjoyed Emma Badenhorst’s rendition of Adele’s Rolling in The Deep and Marion Loudon singing Cher.

The Sibaya Theatre - along with their production When Continents Collide (not sure what the title means) - is a welcome addition to our entertainment scene.

It will be running on Friday and Saturday evenings at 20h00 until June 18. Tickets R170 to R180 can be booked at ticketpros.co.za – Keith Millar
