NEW ZULU HEADRESTS AT ELIZABETH GORDON GALLERY

New at the Elizabeth Gordon Gallery are Zulu Headrests from Richard Chakwizira.

Headrests in the Zulu culture are an important feature in a traditional home. Headrests were used by both men and woman, and by social custom, the headrest is frequently offered to the bridegroom from the bride.

The headrests are hand-sculptured from a single hardwood block, and are either flat or curved on top to form the pillow effect. The decorations vary from tribe to tribe but the more detail on the piece, the greater the importance or status of the owner.

The paintings are both framed in off-white mounts and a simple black box frame. The paintings can be removed from their frames for freighting, and the price will be adjusted accordingly.

They can be viewed at the Elizabeth Gordon Gallery - 120 Florida Road in Durban - or online at https://elizabethgordon.co.za
