A vibrant new musical for Disability Month opens at The Playhouse on November 17, 2022.

African Sinakho Arts, in Association with The Playhouse Company, will present Thetha Mosadi The Musical. Aimed at breaking the silence about issues affecting women with disabilities, and young women in general, this vibrant new theatre production runs at the Playhouse from November 17 to 19, 2022.

Thetha Mosadi (Speak Out Woman) encourages society to create a more enabling environment for the voiceless to be heard. This powerful fusion of song, dance and dialogue salutes the Youth and Women of KwaZulu-Natal with disabilities, who have been trained and mentored by African Sinakho Arts and women in general. It is a celebration of freedom of expression which is a legacy of all post 1994 South African citizens.

Written and directed by Bukelwa Cakata, the storyline of this important musical contributes to the worldwide dialogue that explores why most African women still feel silenced, and how the performing arts can create a more enabling environment for the voiceless to be heard.

The plot deals with the life of Nomathemba, a married young woman who gets involved in a car accident and loses her ability to walk. The production highlights her struggles to cope with life as a woman in a male-dominated world, as well as her valiant attempts at transcending the accessibility challenges she now faces as a disabled woman, by making her voice heard.

Produced by Ndileka Santi, with music by Thandi Gcwensa, Jerry Bosoga, Thulani Gabela, Bukelwa Cakata, and Khombisile Miya, Thetha Mosadi features a cast of 80 performers with various disabilities sharing the limelight with their able-bodied counterparts.

The public opening on Thursday November 17 at 19h00 will be preceded by a 30-minute programme with speeches. The performance is two hours with a 30-minute interval.

There will be a school’s performance on Friday November 18 at 14h00. The final show is on Saturday November 19 at 19h00.

Tickets R120 (a concession of R60 for group bookings of 10+ people, children, and pensioners). For bookings go to Web Tickets or Pick n’ Pay. Entry is free of charge for the schools’ performance.
