Casa Mexicana

Designed and built over 28 years ago by the late Barry Lovegrove, this garden features a unique combination of extensive hardscaped elements with an entirely indigenous plant collection. Featuring many strong architectural features inspired by Spanish style of the house, the garden has derived an Afro-Mexican concept. Included are water features, hand-painted tiles, an orchid house and art studio, a secret forest walk, along with a collection of aloes, plectanthrus, mature trees and numerous potted succulents. In recent months the garden has been re-imagined by Mike Hammersley.

This garden is not suitable for people who might struggle with steps. There are no balustrades and many uneven paved surfaces.

The address is 35 Montgomery Drive, Athlone, Pietermaritzburg.
