MBONGENI NGEMA IN CONCERT

SA’s cultural icon Mbongeni Ngema is sure to pull the crowds when he appears in concert at The Playhouse next month! The event will feature the best of Dr Ngema’s chart topping numbers from the legendary Sarafina soundtrack. The programme also boasts many of the maestro’s mega hits from his prolific back catalogue that made the Ngema name a legendary brand on the world’s stages.

Mbongeni Ngema in Concert is a nostalgic return of the icon to his people in South Africa after 40 years of globe-trotting and wooing audiences around the world with his gigantic theatrical productions like Woza Albert, Township Fever, Asinamali, Sarafina, to mention but a few.

A celebration of Mbaqanga music, the Ngema extravaganza comprises a powerhouse line-up musicians, singers, and dancers - with Ngema as the lead artist. Mega hit items on the bill will feature showstoppers such as Stimela Sase Zola, My Fohloza, and Freedom is Coming Tomorrow.

The son of the African soil is coming back home to his people to celebrate and calibrate his homecoming with an outpouring of his finest music, which has passed into legend. Mbongeni Ngema became a musician and began acting in local theatre groups in the 1970s. His career took off in 1981 with Woza Albert, which toured the United States and Europe, as well as South Africa. Ngema went on to achieve further global success with Asinamali! (1983) a musical about police violence and racist laws; and Sarafina! (1987) which addresses the struggle against apartheid in the 1970s. This was made into a movie in 1992.

Other acclaimed titles included Township Fever, Mama! The Musical of Freedom, House of Shaka, Lion of the East, and The Zulu, which toured South Africa and Swaziland in 2013. In addition to writing the music for his plays, Dr Ngema has composed a string of mega hit songs. He’s won virtually every accolade there is to win, including a slew of Emmy, Tony, Dalro, Vita and Lifetime Achievement Awards! Also, an Honorary Doctorate and a Living Legend Award.
