RAINBOW RESTAURANT'S SUMMER 2022 SEASON

The Rainbow Restaurant's Summer 2022 Season is sponsored by Concerts SA.

Concerts SA is a project of SAMRO, managed by IKS Cultural Consulting.

The project is funded by the Norwegian Embassy in South Africa. Info Line: 060 444 1750

November 20: Qadasi and Madala Kune

The globe-trotting maskanda duo of David Jenkins and Maqhinga Radebe are also graduates of the free-entry Concerts SA supported programme, although Radebe was already hugely popular with Rainbow audiences due to his work with the Shabalala Rhythm maskanda band of Sibongiseni Shabalala of Ladysmith Black Mambazo famed. They first performed in a five-piece line-up at the Rainbow in 2013!

Making it a standout double bill showcasing the sounds of KZN, Zulu-guitar legend, Madala Kunene will be presenting a solo set. Madala's performance history at the Rainbow goes right back to the turbulent '80's and the band Zanusi.

Time: Doors open 13h00, event ends 18h00.

Tickets: Minimum R20 pay-what-you-can requested

November 27: Melvin Peters Quartet

Such a fine showcase of KZN based talent, that has graced the Rainbow stage since live music started in 1983 would be incomplete without the inimitable Melvin Peters on the bill so this was one of the first slots to be filled. Sure to have the OG's bopping along.

BAND: Melvin Peters (piano); Jeff Robinson (sax and flute); Philani Ngidi (bass) and Bruce Baker (drums)

Time: Doors open 13h00m, event ends 18h00.

Tickets: R100

December 4: Sibusiso Mashiloane Quartet

Not much that that can be added to all the press that multi-award-winning pianist, Sibusiso Mash Mashiloane has been gathering these past six years. He was on fire when appearing in Rainbow’s "back from COVID concert" with Bheki Khoza in June 2022.

Back-to-back concerts featuring KZN piano royalty in Melvin Peters, followed by this generations' star, Sibu Mashiloane.

BAND: Sibusiso Mashiloane (piano); Riley Giandhari (drums); Qhubekani Mthethwa (bass) and Thabo Sikhakane (trumpet)

Time: Doors open 1pm, event ends 6pm.

Tickets: R100

December 11: Bongani Nkwanyana Band

plus Gagamela

For many years second bassist in the Sipho Gumede Band, Nkwanyana has come into his own as a band leader, yet still remaining true to a format and style pioneered by the late legendary bassist, whose music and career was so intertwined with the Rainbow. Audiences will sing and cheer along to Nkwanyana hits like iThembaLami but hold onto everything when the opening bars of Mantombi or When Days are Dark, Friends are Few ring out!

BAND: Bongani Nkwanyana (lead bass); Mazwakhe Gumede (second bass); Barney Bophela (piano); Hector Cebekhulu (keyboards); Thabiso Mnanyana (drums) Nhlanhla Moeletsane (trumpet); Manelisi Khumalo (sax) and Andile Ndlovu (vocals).

Gagamela are a four-piece maskanda/isi'cathamiya outfit, formed in 2022. The group is fronted by vocalist Sharon Mthembu, who is no stranger to Rainbow audiences, having performed on their stage as part of the Shabalala Rhythm band. Additional vocals come courtesy of Zwanganabantu Radebe, who has also appeared with Shabalala Rhythm at the Rainbow. The third vocalist is Gagamela Shabalala, grandson of Ladysmith Black Mambazo founder, Joseph Shabalala. The group is rounded off by guitarist, Skahle Radebe, son of Maqhinga Radebe (appearing on 20/11). Keeping it in the family, so to speak. They will be backed by the rhythm section from Nkwanyana's band.

Time: Doors open 13h00, event ends 18h00.

Tickets: R100

December 16: Bheki Khoza Quartet

The Rainbow celebrates its official 41st birthday on December 17 and this concert is its gift to regular clientele to say thank you for the support. As for Khoza, he has stated that going forward he wants to "own" December 16 at The Rainbow.

BAND LINE-UP: t.b.c

Time: Music between 14h00 and 18h00

Entry FREE!

December 18: The Rainbow's 41st Birthday Concert

This event is being curated in partnership with journalist, Niren Tolsi and photographer, Rafs Mayet who will be filming it for the documentary, Chasing the Rainbow: The Struggle for Jazz, Jazz for the Struggle.

It has been many years since saxophonist Khaya Mahlangu last appeared at The Rainbow, which is a shame as he cut his teeth on their stage when super-group, Sakhile first took the local scene by storm back in the early '80's. This special concert will be a generational conversation that encapsulates the story of The Rainbow - then and now. Helping tell that story will be trumpeter, Mandla Mlangeni along with a stellar band. One set will showcase Mlangeni compositions and the other, Mahlangu compositions.

BAND: Khaya Mahlangu (sax); Mandla Mlangeni (trumpet); Bokani Dyer (piano); Reza Khota (guitar); Romy Brauteseth (bass) and Sphelelo Mazibuko (drums)

Time: Doors open 13h00. This one could go on a bit later than usual so no end time set.

Tickets: First batch of 100 tickets at R150 will be released on Webtickets on 10/11/2022. See event page on Facebook - The Rainbow - for ticket link or go to webtickets.co.za
