WARBURTON & COCKBURN IN CONCERT

On March 5, 2023, Friends of Music will present KZN’s eminent musical Doctors, Andrew Warburton and Christopher Cockburn, who will play masterpieces for four hands by Mozart, Schubert and Ravel at one piano.

Both artists need no introduction to KZN classical audiences. In addition to their performance careers, they have held academic posts for many years in the School of Music at UKZN.

Dr Andrew Warburton is acknowledged as one of the finest solo pianists and accompanists in South Africa. He has enjoyed a diverse musical career throughout South Africa and abroad. He served as Musical Director/Repetiteur/Chorus Master for both the Playhouse Company and the State Theatre. 

He is currently Lecturer in Piano, Director of the Opera School and Choral Academy, and head of Western Classical Performance Studies at the UKZN School of Music. He graduated with a PhD in piano performance in 2018.

Dr Christopher Cockburn is well-known throughout South Africa as an organ recitalist and accompanist. After graduating with a Masters degree in Organ Performance from UCT, he studied in London and was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Organists. On returning to South Africa, he was appointed Director of Music at Grahamstown Cathedral and Lecturer in Music at Rhodes University.

 In 2003 he moved to Durban to take up a lectureship at UKZN, where he also graduated with a Doctorate in Musicology. He has recently retired from his post at UKZN.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Sonata for piano 4 hands in F major, K.497

Maurice Ravel: Mother Goose Suite 

Franz Schubert: Fantasy in F minor for piano 4 hands, D.940

Moritz Moszkowski: Spanish Dances

Antonin Dvoràk: Two extracts from Slavonic Dances for piano 4 hands.

The Prelude Performer for the concert will be Tasmin Hastings (19) who studies piano with Dr Andrew Warburton. She is preparing to continue her studies abroad. She will perform Beethoven's Piano Sonata No.26 in E flat major, Op. 81a, ''Les Adieux'' 1st movement and Rachmaninoff’s Prelude Op. 23 No. 5.

The concert will take place on March 5, 2023, at 15h00 at the Durban Jewish Centre.
