FOM & MELVIN PETERS CELEBRATION CONCERT

Internationally renowned jazz pianist, Melvin Peters, is celebrating 40 years as a performing musician. He also recently celebrated his 60th birthday. To mark the occasion, Friends of Music will be throwing a party at the Durban Jewish Centre which will feature the Melvin Peters Quintet along with guest artists.

The Celebration Concert will take place on March 26, 2023, at 14h30. Concert goers will be seated at tables so that they may enjoy their picnics.

Melvin Peters needs no introduction to audiences in Durban. He is a well-known jazz pianist, composer, clinician and church organist. He began studying jazz under the tutelage of Darius Brubeck at the University of Natal in 1983. Accordingly, he celebrates the milestone of being involved in jazz for 40 years.

Apart from being an established performer, he is also an educator. He taught for ten years at the University of Durban-Westville in the 90’s. He has performed at most of the country’s prominent jazz festivals. These include the Grahamstown Jazz Festival, the Joy of Jazz Festival, as well as the Hilton Arts Festival.  Internationally, he has performed quite extensively, most notably in the US, UK, Germany, France and Sweden.

Peters is a versatile musician, and straddles two vastly different careers, that of jazz musician as well as church organist. He has been the organist and choirmaster at St Paul’s Church, Durban for 19 years. Joining Melvin at the Durban Jewish Centre will be well-known artists such as George Mari, Debbie Mari and Jeff Robinson. Audiences will be treated to a wide variety of jazz, including traditional and South African.

Peters will also perform a few original compositions. The theme for the afternoon is: “My Journey in Jazz – A Retrospective”.

2023 also marks the 40th year of the existence of Friends of Music. So, plenty of reasons to celebrate. LET’S PARTY!
