LEX KORTEN (USA) & MARK LEWANDOWSKI FOR CENTRE FOR JAZZ

The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music will present Lex Korten (USA) and Mark Lewandowski (USA) featuring Bruce Baker on Wednesday May 10, 2023, at 17h30.

Lex Korten is the 2020 winner of the Unisa International Piano Competition. Since winning the competition, he has gone on to establish himself as one of the busiest and most prominent jazz pianists in New York City. He has performed with an impressive list of artists such as Tyshawn Sorey, Melissa Aldana, Jaleel Shaw, Mike Moreno and many others at clubs and prestigious jazz festivals across the US. A former student of Geri Allen, he has also taught at the New School, Long Island University and he has students at Manhattan School of Music, University of Rochester and several institutions.

Mark Lewandowski is the 2022 winner of the Unisa International Strings Competition. He studied at the Guildhall School in London and Julliard in the US. He has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Joe Chambers, Sheila Jordan, Steve Wilson, The Mingus Big Band, The Vanguard Orchestra and many others. Lewandowski is currently one of the busiest bass players in New York City.

Both artists are in-demand and high-profile musicians in New York City with hectic performance schedules. They will be performing the Centre for Jazz at UKZN with Bruce Baker on drums. Their concert at UKZN is part of their South African tour which included concerts in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, most notably as headline artists for the 2023 Unisa Jazz Festival in which they performed in a combo and as featured guests with the Unisa Big Band.

The concert takes place on May 10, 2023, at 17h30 (doors open at 17h00) at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music on the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Howard College Campus, Dennis Shepstone Building, level 2.
