Pecha Kucha Durban, in partnership with the Centre for Creative Arts at the University of Kwazulu-Natal, Point Waterfront Arts Festival, Alliance Française, and iSupport Creative Business, presents PechaKucha night on Africa Day Thursday, May 25, at 18h00.
Entry is R30, and the night will feature eight inspiring speakers sharing their ideas, works, and thoughts, closed off by a performance by pianist Sibusiso Mash Mashiloane and his band.
PechaKucha 20x20 is a simple presentation format where the speakers show 20 images, each for 20 seconds. PechaKucha Nights are informal and fun gatherings where creative people get together and share their ideas, works, thoughts, and holiday snaps -- just about anything, really -- in the PechaKucha 20x20 format. PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 and is now in over 800 cities. Durban has proudly hosted PK Evenings since 2007, and the organisers are back after a little break.
This event brings together some incredible people to share their authentic African stories. Siyanda Mgangato, a healthcare professional and part of the #Keready youth-health campaign, will speak about her work and life.
Cultural activist and arts manager Andre le Roux will discuss how Concerts SA has made a difference in South Africa. Cultural producer Luyanda Sosibo will give us a glimpse into his work and the monthly Style Sundays event. Sihle “Mhligo” Ndima, a youth worker and artist, will tell stories about the impact of his work on the community.
Aluta Humane will show her world as a multifaceted artist and LGBTQ+ activist. At the same time, independent media practitioner Thobeka Dhlomo will share her story as curator of the mobile exhibition Music You Can. Cultural producer and photographer Niamh Walsh-Vorster will also give an inside look into her life, as she touches on many projects behind the scenes. To top it off, pianist and lecturer Sibusiso Mash Mashiloane, will share his story and perform with his band.
PechaKucha night takes place on May 25, 2023, at Alliance Française de Durban, 22 Sutton Crescent, Morningside in Duran.
