The Reals are all musicians out of the topdrawer and they have been playing together for many years. This shows in the way they gel together on stage and the standard of the performance they deliver. (Review by Keith Millar)

There is a good reason why the Reals tribute show, Tribute to Dire Straits, keeps returning to the stage at Durban’s Rhumbelow Theatre. It is because it is just such a good show.

Dire Straits was a brilliant British rock band which was active from 1977 to 1988 and then again from 1990 to 1995. Their sound was influenced by a variety of musical styles including jazz, folk and blues. To date, they have sold over 120 million albums. They have also won many awards for their performances including four Grammy Awards, three Brit awards and two MTV Video Music Awards.

They were led by singer/songwriter Mark Knopfler who is also regarded as one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time.

Their first hit was Sultans of Swing and they followed that up with many hits such as Money for Nothing, Brothers in Arms, Private Investigations, Communiqué, Romeo and Juliet, Telegraph Road, Tunnel of Love, Solid Rock and Down to the Waterline.

All these songs, plus more, are performed by Durban’s leading tribute band, the Reals.

The Reals are fronted by the uber-talented Barry Thomson on guitar and vocals. In my opinion he could be a doppelganger of Mark Knopfler and does great justice to the work of this icon.

Also in the line-up for this show is musical director and keyboardist, Dawn Selby, bassist Andy Turrell, drummer Mali Sewell and guest guitarist Shaun Dragt.

The Reals are all musicians out of the topdrawer and they have been playing together for many years. This shows in the way they gel together on stage and the standard of the performance they deliver.

The show is illustrated with some excellent AV content mostly featuring the laconic Mark Knopfler while on the technical side Barry Meehan on lighting and Andre Norden on sound deliver with their usual quality.

The place to be this weekend for the best in entertainment is the Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo. However, there is only one more performance and that is fully booked out. So, keep your eyes open for the next time the Reals present their Tribute to Dire Straits.
