The 2023 Durban FilmMart Industry Programme
for 2023 is out now!
The Durban FilmMart Institute (DFMI) is delighted to present the 2023 DFM Industry Programme, now live and available for viewing on their website. Now entering its 14th edition, the 2023 DFM will be held from July 21 to 24, under the theme African Constellations, which will highlight the talent and diversity of the African film industry.
This year's DFM marks the welcome and long-awaited return to a physical edition, spanning four days at the wonderful Southern Sun Elangeni Hotel in Durban.
The DFM 2023 Industry Programme approaches the latest trends and pressing issues head-on and sees the return of key thematic strands such as DFM in Conversation, Durban Does Docs, Animation@DFM and SA in Focus, while also introducing two additional strands: Talking Cents and The Power of Programming, which are set to enrich the overall experience.
DFM in Conversation
Durban Does Docs
The Durban FilmMart and The African Real
Collective have joined forces to co-curate this year’s Durban Does Docs,
the official documentary-focused stream of the programme. We’ll be joined by
Amil Shivji of Kijiweni Productions, Reem Hadad from
Al Jazeera, and other guest speakers who will unpack topics from cross
continental collaboration, to how we can develop the African documentary
community on a more holistic level.
Animation@DFM
Animation@DFM also returns for its third
year, dedicated to exploring the world of animation across the African
continent. Animation projects are a vital part of the official DFM Pitch and
Finance forum, and this year’s programme will signal a deeper exploration of
the animation landscape.
SA in Focus
The popular strand SA in Focus explores the
expansive South African film and television industry with leading local film
organisations. We’ll hear from leading industry organisations like Sisters
Working in Film and Television, the Writers Guild of South Africa, and The
Independent Black Filmmakers Collective, among others.
NEW: Talking Cents
One of the new streams we’re introducing is
Talking Cents, which will present panel discussions that revolve around
the financial landscape, aimed at filmmakers in Africa who are seeking
financial support and sustainable success. We’ll be joined by the likes of John
Giwa-Amu of Goodgate Media, Pape Boye from Black Mic Mac, and other significant
industry voices, covering topics such as demystifying Hollywood, creating
equity beyond Africa, and many others.
