The Live The Spirit Residency Band (USA) led by Ernest Dawkins performs live at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music on Monday October 9, 2023, at 20h00.
This project reflects the determination and spirit that energised the South African freedom movement led by Nelson Mandela and acknowledges the role that the sounds and images of American jazz musicians from the United States played in developing the political discourse of resistance in apartheid South Africa. We draw together traditional sounds of South Africa, with contemporary African American-influenced jazz, encapsulated in a shared aural history – a jazz opera. The journey of writing, recording, and presenting this work has been long and personal.
It all started with Dawkin’s first visit to South Africa in 1997. He experienced a homecoming like no other. He experienced a sense of belonging, felt the presence of ancestors, and met many significant people who are amongst his closest friends to this day.
This gig is a part of the 27th Poetry Africa supported by the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the National Arts Council of South Africa, the KZN Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, the French Institute of South Africa and Total Energies.
The Live The Spirit Residency Band concert takes place on October 9. Doors open at 19h30. Music starts at 20h00.
Tickets R60 (R30 for pensioners or students). Booking: zamat1@ukzn.ac.za
