(Above: The Reals with guest guitarist Shaun Dragt: Andy Turrell, Dawn Selby, Barry Thomson & Mali Sewell, with Shaun Dragt)

Start the New year with great live entertainment at the Rhumbelow.

Its two venues are:

Rhumbelow Durban North: 50 Margaret Maytom Avenue.

Rhumbelow Theatre Umbilo: 42 Cunningham Road

Durban’s busiest and most enduring theatre, the Rhumbelow Theatre in Umbilo is starting the year as it means to continue with a full and varied programme of live theatre, comedy, films, and original music to welcome in 2024.

The Rhumbelow has been extraordinary in responding to the changing needs of the performing arts and entertainment landscape by offering regular quality movies; filmed live screenings of some of the world’s best ballet, theatre and opera productions, as well as regular live events, music and comedy.

Among the highlights are: start the new year with a good belly laugh (heaven knows we need it) in the company of Barry Hilton for two shows only this week on January 10 and 11.

Enjoy a magic start to the new year in the company of Brendon Peel and Li Lau with their Extreme Magic - fresh from Las Vegas, coming to the Rhumbelow for one weekend only from Friday January 19 until Sunday 21. Prepare to witness the impossible made possible, in front of your very eyes - from daring feats, to mind boggling magic tricks, and unique acts of mind reading, this show is a guaranteed treat for the whole family.

Join Rhumbelow for Walk the Line - the timeless music of Johnny Cash whose music is a sun-soaked journey through country and rock, echoing the soul of Americana. His rugged voice and timeless tales ignite the summer air with raw emotion. Come and enjoy The Black Lapels (Rob Warren, Garth Warren and Gareth Gale) and special guests Tori du Plessis and Colin Peddie with great music and top-notch musicianship.

(Right: Lisa Bobbert & Aaron McIlroy)

Lisa Bobbert and Aaron McIlroy played to great audiences over the festive season with their fab comedy two-hander, Mr and Mrs Normal at Northlands – so they are bringing it to Durban for one weekend from Friday January 26 until 28, 2024.

“What is normal for one person is not necessarily normal for another person,” says Lisa Bobbert. “The age-old notion of typical nuclear family, with stereotypical roles and ways of doing things, doesn’t really exist in the same way it used to. There was normal, then new normal, followed by newest normal …. Which became exhausting, so now let’s just go back to being normal again! In fact – don’t panic, act normal!”

Lisa and Aaron have chosen some fabulous show tunes, familiar clap-alongs, top hits, and timeless ballads in their musical comedy cabaret, which is directed and choreographed by the multi-talented Daisy Spencer.

Hardworking and versatile Durban outfits, The Reals are in the house from Friday February 2 to Sunday February 4 with their Tribute to the iconic 80s music of Dire Straits. Barry Thomson, Dawn Selby, Mali Sewell, Andy Turrell with guest guitarist Shaun Dragt.

Dire Straits was a British rock band formed in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (lead vocals and lead guitar) and his younger brother David Knopfler. Their more conventional sound appealed to modern audiences weary of the overproduced stadium rock of the 1970s.  Dire Straits' fifth album Brothers in Arms, released in May 1985 was their highest selling studio album with sales of over 30 million.

Armand Joubert is a magnificent pop-artist who was a contestant on The Voice South Africa, who is known for his energetic performances, high notes and impeccable style. He comes to the Rhumbelow Durban on February 9, 10 and 11, with his show, I’m Viral. Born and raised in Witbank Mpumalanga., he started singing at the age of five years old. He draws his musical inspiration from artists like Queen, Adam Lambert, Prince and Lady Gaga.

In between the live shows, there are a great programme of Rhumbelow Film Club screenings as well..
