As an esteemed educator and researcher at The University of KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Makhathini brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to his music, creating intellectually stimulating and emotionally stirring compositions. With a career that has taken him to prestigious festivals and venues around the world, including the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, the Essence Festival, and the legendary Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City, Dr Makhathini continues to push the boundaries of jazz music with his innovative approach and unparalleled talent.

In addition to his prolific career as a performer, Dr Makhathini is also a dedicated producer and label owner, having released eight critically-acclaimed albums since 2014. His latest album, In the Spirit of Ntu, released in 2022, has been hailed as a masterpiece, showcasing Dr Makhathini's evolution as an artist and his deep connection to his African roots.
