TILDA TEARLE AT ST CLEMENTS

(Tilda Tearle’s My personal Comrades Marathon journey)

Monday March 4, 2024 — 18h00

Table Bookings Essential: RSVP ST Clements 031 202 2511

Pieter Scholtz and friends invite you to a marathon session with a difference.

Two superwomen! Get up close and personal and experience the Comrades Marathon while sipping on something chilled and delightful and without having to pound the tarmac between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

Join us for this St Clem book launch. Tilda Tearle, the first woman home in the 1993 Comrades and author of My personal Comrades Marathon journey will discuss her book, read from it and be in conversation with Mondays at Six regular, Cheryl Winn, who won the Comrades in 1982, was chairperson of the Comrades Marathon Association in 2017 and remains actively involved with the world's largest and oldest ultramarathon race.

Tilda Tearle has been living on the Berea since 1984. “Many residents have probably seen me running or walking around the area over the years.”

The Comrades Marathon legend was the first woman across the line in 1993. “But prior to that, I came 4th, then 3rd, then 2nd — and finally first.” Tilda has completed 30 Comrades marathons, something only a few women in the world have been able to do.

“I have had a long, illustrious love affair with Comrades,” she says. “As for mileage, I have probably run around the world a few times.

“My book is a personal story spanning 40 years. It covers how I started running, every Comrades I have run, and other life events during that 40 years. It is a book, not only for runners, but it has something in it for everyone. Hopefully it will inspire people and possibly a reader may cross a finish line which changes his or her life.”

From the Comrades Marathon website: “Comrades Marathon legend Tilda Tearle is the holder of Triple Green Number 5701. Having won in 1993, she also has three gold medals, seven silver, 13 bronze, one Bill Rowan and six Vic Clapham medals. Her total of 30 Comrades medals makes her one of only five women to have achieved their triple laurels. Tilda is iconic. With her blonde pigtails and never-ending smile on route, she became the darling of Comrades runners and supporters alike.”

Tilda shares this quote:

“Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion: The potential for greatness lives within each of us.” — Wilma Rudolph (American sprinter who overcame childhood polio and went on to become a world-record-holding Olympic champion and international sports icon in track and field.)

Books will be on sale at R200 each. Cash preferred (EFT an option.)

When the donation box is passed around, we encourage a minimum of R50 per person. Waived for anyone who buys Tilda’s book.
