NB: This final concert, tomorrow evening, is totally sold out. However, because it is a Public Holiday, music lovers may want to consider attending the open rehearsal at 10h00 in the morning instead. See information below

The Final Concert FOUR will take place in the Playhouse Opera tomorrow (Human Rights Day, March 21, 2024, at 19h00)

All too soon the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra wraps up its 2024 World Symphony Summer Season with the final concert featuring an Ode to animals, folk dances, and a favourite city.

The season has gained momentum, with last week’s joyous concert being totally sold out! The final concert is an extra special treat for music lovers of all ages.

Conductor Daniel Boico returns to Durban to round off the season on a high, with a richly curated programme of showstoppers; Dvořák: Bohemian-folk inspired Czech Suite - and ending with Mozart’s exhilarating ‘Symphony no 38 ‘The Prague’ – one of the masterpieces he created in tribute to the city that took the young Austrian genius composer to its heart, the others being the opera’s Don Giovanni (1787) and La Clemenza di Tito (1791).

The centrepiece for the evening’s programme is Camille Saint Saëns’ The Carnival of the Animals - a playful, humorous musical suite of 14 movements honouring a variety of animals – the ass, the tortoise, the elephant, the kangaroo, the swan, birds and fossils – among others.

The work, about 25 minutes in duration, was a piece Camille Saint Saëns’ wrote for fun, for a private performance by two pianos and chamber ensemble.

The piece is now more frequently performed with a full orchestral complement of strings.  On piano are Nina Schumann and Megan-Geoffrey Prins.
