ZEMQADINI

There are no winners at war, just the ones who survive to tell the tale.

This tale showcases the resilience of human connection amidst adversity.

ZemQadini follows the journey of two war veterans, left in their disability; blindness and muteness yet are still bonded by memories, and wounded dreams. Both grappling with post-traumatic stress, relying on each other for support and solace.

Written by Sboniso Msimango, directed and produced by Bongani Mbatha is a narrative inspired by the war that happened in the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal in 1998 just four years post-apartheid when the eZembeni community and emaQadini community were fighting over the physical placement of the Chief.

The play touches on war veterans living with PTSD and association disorder, bouncing from reality to memory. The style is physical peace, using storytelling to survive being disowned by the mind.

What happens when a body is not fit to hold memories? Tale of friends bruised by the war. The narrative emphasizes the importance of looking at the past as a way of moving forward. There are no winners at war, just the ones who survive to tell the tale.

ZemQadini runs from May 10 to 11 at 18h00 in the Playhouse Company’s Loft Theatre, 231 Smith St, Durban Central, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
