Friends of Music Is excited to introduce a new Durban String
Quartet, Quartet Simila.
Driven by their divergent cultures and experiences the quartet is exploring different styles and eras of music searching for a versatile and unique musical texture.
The quartet features:
Violins : Refiloe Olifant; Evgeny Zhadanov
Viola: Annamaria D’Andrea
Cello: Ayanda Makulwana
Refiloe Olifant started playing violin in Bloemfontein. She studied in Stellenbosch and was a member of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra for a period. She is currently a highly-regarded member of the KZNO. She also appears regularly with Durban’s Baroque 2000 Orchestra.
Evgeny Zhadanov was born in Moscow in 1976 and graduated from the Moscow State Conservatoire in 2001. He has worked with orchestras such as the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra, the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra and the Cairo Symphony Orchestra. He was appointed Associate Concertmaster of the KZNPO earlier this year.
Annamaria D’Andrea was born in Rome. She studied at the Conservatory “Sant Cecila” with postgraduate studies in Switzerland and Germany. She was part of the Symphony Orchestra of Balearas from 1998 to 2004. She joined the KZNPO in 2006. She is a founding member of the Durban groups, Quatro Femmes and the Gypsy Strings.
Ayanda Makulwana was born in Davytown. Johannesburg. His musical journey started with the clarinet and saxophone before moving to classical music and the cello. He has honed his skills with the Johannesburg Philharmonic (Academy) and the National youth Orchestra. He is currently with the KZNPO.
The concert takes place on October 6 at 14h30 at the Durban Jewish Centre – KE Masinga Road.
The programme features Mozart’s Quartet in G K.V. 387 (Dedicated to Josef Haydn) and Haydn’s String Quartet No. 42 Kaiser.
