MAYA SPECTOR TO PERFORM AT CENTRE FOR JAZZ AND POPULAR MUSIC

 

The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) is excited to present Cape Town-based vocalist and songwriter Maya Spector in a special performance on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at 17h30.

This highly anticipated event will showcase Maya’s rich vocal talent and diverse musical background, blending jazz, soul, and more.

Maya Spector, a graduate of UKZN (2009) with a major in jazz performance and music education, has built a remarkable career spanning over two decades. 

Her voice, often described as "pure honey" with a depth that evokes both darkness and sweetness, draws listeners into her world of storytelling.

A global citizen at heart, Maya’s musical journey has taken her across the world, beginning with her first professional performance at the prestigious Kennedy Center in Washington DC alongside renowned figures like Jim Henson and Phylicia Rashad. Since then, she has written and recorded her jazz/soul fusion album Honey & Heartache, released over 20 singles in a variety of genres including jazz, EDM, soul, and rock, and collaborated on numerous films, jingles, and projects. Maya’s performances have brought her to stages across the globe, and she continues to captivate audiences with her diverse musical range.

In addition to her music career, Maya furthered her education during the 2020 lockdown, receiving a full scholarship for a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Practice Management from Henley Business School Africa. Maya is also the founder of The Papaya House, a collaborative female empowerment cultural production house.

Whether performing classical, jazz, or musical theatre, Maya continues to inspire with her dedication to the power of music, stating, "I don't live for music, I live because of it!"

Her performance takes place on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. Doors open at 17h00, Music starts at 17h30.
