67 BLANKETS FOR NELSON MANDELA DAY CELEBRATES 11 EXTRAORDINARY YEARS

Crafting Happiness at Nelson Mandela University, Gqeberha, South Africa.

With just a few days remaining, South Africans are called to pick up their knitting needles and crochet hooks for a heartwarming cause! As 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day celebrates 11 extraordinary years of spreading joy, a dazzling blanket installation is set to brighten Nelson Mandela University on March 20, 2025. The installation will mark the United Nations International Day of Happiness with a magnificent showcase of unity, compassion, and creativity. KnitWits nationwide have a few days to ensure their handcrafted blankets are part of this vibrant celebration.

This year's centrepiece is a cheerful yellow smiley emoji with sparkling blue eyes and a red smile, against a rainbow of warm hues — reds, oranges, blues, purples, and pinks. Surrounding this enormous blanket, will be a display of colourful happy blankets made by the many KnitWits from far and wide. These creations will form a giant tapestry of happiness, ready to delight and inspire. 25% of these donated blankets will remain in Gqeberha , and go directly to people in need of warmth in the Eastern Cape.

KnitWits can send handmade blankets in any colours or patterns. Every contribution will weave warmth and joy into this stunning work of art.

A Message from the Gqeberha Ambassadors

Ambassadors across the country have worked tirelessly to collect and send blankets. Their dedication and hard work have made a meaningful difference, honouring Madiba's legacy in the most heart-warming way. Gqeberha Ambassadors in particular are central to these operations and their efforts bring warmth to countless individuals in need.

“We are excited to be at the heart of this powerful initiative, which not only honours Madiba's legacy but also offers a meaningful lesson in social responsibility and generosity. Our province has significant needs as winter approaches, and with blankets donated staying in the Eastern Cape, we hope this effort will bring warmth to both bodies and hearts. Initiatives like this remind us of the extraordinary impact of kindness, creativity, and collective action.”

The Legacy of 67 Blankets: Spreading Compassion One Stitch at a Time

Founded in 2013 by Carolyn Steyn, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day began as a simple yet meaningful challenge from Zelda la Grange, Nelson Mandela’s personal assistant: make 67 blankets to honour Mandela Day. Over the years, it has grown into a global movement that shatters records and knits communities together through compassion and creativity.

“After COVID delays, we are thrilled to finally bring this joyful initiative to Gqeberha, under the perfect banner of happiness and unity,” said Steyn. “The ethos of 67 Blankets has always been about spreading warmth and uplifting communities, and it’s wonderful to see this spirit being embraced by Nelson Mandela University.”
