Lot of things to do with Dad.

It’s Father’s Day on Sunday, June 15, a day set aside to honouring Dads and father figures.

Saturday June 14

There are some great things one can do with Dad this weekend. Youngsters: encourage Dad to pop into Glenwood Village Centre on Saturday morning for some Father’s Day themed activities – an array of vintage and collectable cars on display, live music …. and boerie rolls and cup-cakes aplenty!

Glenwood car enthusiasts Kevin Cox and Jane Tayfield together with some friends, will bring their prized cars along to the centre on Saturday morning for visitors to admire. A pop-up car showroom will be created on the mezzanine level close to the top of the staircase. The car owners will be on hand to chat about their pride and joy.

Also upstairs will be singer / performer, Gary McKenzie, singing along to some Father’s Day tunes.  There will be an abundance of boerie rolls courtesy of SPAR and some of the food outlets, and Carols Home Industries will have plenty of yummy treats available to take home for afternoon tea.

The activation will take place from 09h00 until noon. Glenwood Village is corner Hunt and Che Guevara Road, Glenwood, Durban.

Sunday,June 15

On Sunday June 15, actual Father’s Day, there will be a marvellous opportunity for young orchestral musicians between the ages of 10 and 20 to spend a day working with professional players, learning what it is like to be part of an orchestra.

The project called Let’s Band Together is the initiative of the KZN Youth Orchestra and SA Society of Music Teachers Committees. It will take place at Durban Girls College. Young musicians will have sectional tuition with professionals from KZNPO and then will put five pieces together.

This will culminate in a concert at 15h30 which is R50 for adults and R20 pensioners and scholars. Patrons must book through Quicket. It will feature the KZNPO, the KZNYO and then the massed orchestra. The music ranges from classical to pop and South African repertoire.

Funded by the KZN Performing Arts Trust, it will be a wonderful opportunity for orchestral instrument students to come along for a day of fun and to get a feel for what it is like to be part of an orchestra. For more information, call Cathy on 0823498362.

Further afield, 1000 Hills Tourism presents Umgeni Steam Railway Father’s Day Train Trips which depart from and return to Inchanga Station: Father’s Day, 15 June, throughout the day from 09h00 until 15h00. Every hour there will be short trips departing from Inchanga Station. No booking is required. Trips are R80 pp.

Before or after your trip, you can browse through the Inchanga Station Craft Market where there are various treasures on sale, food to suit most tastes and activities for the whole family.

Visit the Inchanga Railway Museum situated in the Old Station Master's House or find Thomas & Friends in the Modeller's Shed on the platform.
