THE WILD: NEW DSTV TIMESLOT

M-Net’s ground-breaking soap, The Wild, will move to a later timeslot on DStv from January 16, 2012.

The decision to screen The Wild an hour later - at 19h00 instead of 18h00 - was based on recent market research and feedback from fans of the series who didn’t want to miss any of the intrigue happening at Dinaledi Lodge.

Pierre Cloete, M-Net’s Channel Head, says M-Net was very comfortable with the 18h00 timeslot, but had to take note of the increasing requests from satellite viewers to relook the schedule. “Even though The Wild has only been on air since April this year, the soap already has a loyal and passionate following. Lifestyles have changed considerably over the past few years and viewers let us know that they are often still in traffic on their way home, preparing dinner, or spending time with their kids at 18h00. By 19h00 they can sit down, relax and start enjoying what’s on television.”

The timeslot change applies to satellite viewers - M-Net and M-Net HD on DStv - only. M-Net’s terrestrial viewers (those with set-top boxes that only have M-Net) will still have their soap hour from 18h00 to 19h00, with The Wild at 18h00 and Binneland at 18h30.

The Wild revolutionized the way television soaps are filmed by moving all the action outdoors as opposed to filming in a studio. In less than a year, the soap has attracted a new audience to the channel and it is currently the number one show in its target audience.

M-Net invites viewers to give feedback about the change in timeslot, as well as the current story lines, on The Wild’s website and Facebook page at www.facebook.com/TheWildMNet and www.dstv.com/mnet/thewild

To kick-start the new year, M-Net will also take viewers through past story lines in a special called The Wild: The Story So Far on January 11 at 20h30.

SAKHILE HUMBANE

Sakhile Humbane (15) is a young piccolo player from Durban and is attending his second orchestra course run by the National Youth Orchestra Foundation. He loves his instrument (and this year has noted that it was a great choice, as it is much more portable than a tuba!) His music education is sponsored by the KZNPO and he plays for the KZN Youth Wind Band. He is taught by National Youth Orchestra alumna, Lisa Hooper.

Sakhile loves expressing himself through his music, the enjoyment it brings and the ability to entertain people. He comes to the National Youth Orchestra courses to meet other musicians from across the country, and tutors from across the world, and to learn about orchestral music. Learning different styles of music and making new friends is the main reason he's looking forward to the next course.

"What does music mean to me?” he says. “Expressing myself through music, enjoying myself and entertaining people - what more is there? The National Youth Orchestra should be a platform for young inspired musicians to learn to grown more and to gain orchestra experience. It's improving my playing because I get ensemble training and you learn new repertoire."

ACT | UJ ARTS & CULTURE PARTNERSHIP

The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) and UJ Arts & Culture (University of Johannesburg) have entered into a dynamic new partnership.

The joint venture, supported by the University’s Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, will see the launch of a new arts and culture conference next year which will be aimed at South African practitioners. The conference dates will be announced in January 2012.

“We are very excited about this new partnership,” says Brenda Devar, ACT’s Chairperson. “The real value of a South African arts and culture conference lies in the opportunity it presents to network and engage socially whilst exchanging information, knowledge and views on the sector. It is vitally important that the arts do not work in isolated pockets, that we build bridges to connect and integrate the diverse environments in which we function,” she adds.

The inaugural conference will take an in-depth look at the state of arts and culture in South Africa by providing a platform to present research which has been conducted during the past three years. South African arts, culture and heritage organisations are invited to submit expressions of interest to present research at the conference by writing to ACT’s General Manager, Pieter Jacobs, at gm@act.org.za. The closing date for submitting expressions of interest to present research is January 31, 2012.

According to Ashraf Johaardien, the new Head of Arts and Culture at the University of Johannesburg, “ACT and UJ Arts and Culture are uniquely positioned to partner and present this conference. Our combined networks and knowledge base, as well as UJ’s state of the art facilities on our Kingsway and Bunting Road campuses, give us the tools and facilities to create a broad and inclusive platform for an in-depth audit of the state of the arts in South Africa.”

He explains: “By surveying the recent research conducted on the arts and culture landscape we aim to unpack critically important issues facing individual artists, cultural workers and arts organisations in South Africa today.”

A limited number of bursaries will be made available to arts, culture and heritage practitioners from outside Gauteng. ACT will administer these applications as well as the conference registrations which will open early in 2012.

THE UNEXPLODED BOER

Despite endless obscenities, a good story about some of the many unpleasant aspects of South Africa in the past. (Review by Michael Green)

This extraordinary book is the autobiography of a “Boer” who grew up in Cape Town, was a jazz musician, and became involved in drug-running because, he says, he was trying to raise money to leave South Africa and escape the army call-up, this because of his opposition to apartheid.

He wasn’t a successful drug dealer. He soon fell into the hands of the police, and this book is largely about his experiences in that unenviable situation.

He now lives respectably in Vancouver, Canada, aged about 55, with a wife and four children, having survived a lengthy spell in hospital with cancer, acute leukaemia.

An exciting and unusual life, certainly, and the picture that emerges is one of a tough survivor.

The publisher says that the book is written in an electric and hilarious style and adds that it is destined to become a cult classic. Maybe, but the language is so unremittingly rough that many readers, I suspect, will find it neither electric nor hilarious. If you can stomach the endless obscenities it’s a good story about some of the many unpleasant aspects of South Africa in the past.

The Unexploded Boer by Erich Rautenbach is published by Zebra Press and retails at R190. ISBN 978-1-77022-165-9 - Michael Green

GOOD LUCK CHARLIE

Disney Channel’s smash-hit comedy series Good Luck Charlie kickstarts the festive season with the Duncan family’s first ever feature length adventure comedy, The Road Trip Movie premiering on December 17 at 10h30 on Disney Channel.

Starring teen sensation, Bridgit Mendler, the Disney Channel Original Movie promises to bring more adventure, excitement and twice the laughter to TV screens this winter.

In this brand new movie, the much-loved Duncan family go on holiday to Palm Springs which inevitably takes a turn for the worst as Teddy and Amy get separated from the family at the airport – only three days before Christmas! With the odds against them as the clock counts down to Christmas Day, Teddy sets out to reunite the family using all available forms of transportation (bus, car, hitch-hiking, and even a tandem bike) making way for this year’s rather unconventional, Christmas celebration.

Alongside multi-talented Bridgit Mendler, Leigh-Allyn Baker (Will & Grace) stars as Amy Duncan; Bradley Steven Perry (Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure) as Gabe Duncan; Mia Talerico as Charlie Duncan; with Eric Allan Kramer (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, My Name Is Earl) as Bob Duncan; and Jason Dolley (Hatching Pete, Cory in the House) as PJ Duncan, with guest appearances from Debra Monk (Damages, Grey's Anatomy) and Michael Kagan (Desperate Housewives).

Since Good Luck Charlie premiered on Disney Channel UK in November 2010, it achieved the highest ever series launch in its first six weeks on air. Currently, it airs in 169 countries and in 32 different languages.*

The Road Trip Movie will premiere on Disney Channel on December 17 at 10h30.

UJ SA SHORT PLAYS SUBMISSIONS

During 2012, UJ (University of Johannesburg) Arts and Culture will premier SA Shorts directed by Alby Michaels at the National Arts Festival, Grahamstown.

Established, emerging and new playwrights are invited to submit previously unpublished and unproduced ten-minute plays for possible inclusion in the production.

“I see SA Shorts as quickies for a microwave generation. It is also an opportunity for UJ Arts & Culture to start playing a leading role in the development of a new style of theatre,” says Michaels who recently pulled together the ground-breaking season of Reading Gay.

“Following on the success and building on the format of Far Off Off-Broadway (FOOB) which was presented the UJ Drama Company earlier this year, SA Shorts will effectively be a collection of short plays performed by one company of actors,” he explains.

Submissions must be made via e-mail to uj.sa.shorts@gmail.com as a single Word document including a 50-word narrative biography of the playwright and contact details. Playwrights may submit a maximum of two entries. All genres, except musicals and children’s plays, will be accepted.

Characters must be able to be played convincingly by younger actors as the production will be performed with a corps of UJ student performers. Technical and staging requirements must be simple.

The deadline for entries is January 31, 2012. Please note that only successful playwrights will be contacted.

TO SKIN A CAT FUNDRAISER

The To Skin a Cat Fundraiser is an evening of music and an exhibition of funky multi-media artwork and light boxes by invited South African artists on December 17. All proceeds will go towards the production of the documentary film To Skin a Cat by Greg Lomas and Colwyn Thomas which represents a campaign aimed at saving the leopard populations in southern Africa.

To Skin a Cat addresses the loss of leopard populations to an illegal skin trade in southern Africa. The film follows renowned leopard researcher Tristan Dickerson who is attempting to create a high-quality and affordable synthetic fur as an alternative to real skins being used for traditional purposes. The campaign has gathered support both locally and abroad.

“This is a critical time in the making of the film as in January 2012 Tristan Dickerson will attempt to introduce his final synthetic fur to members of the Shembe church at their annual gathering” said Colwyn Thomas. “The film is a solution-based film and documents a really positive and dynamic approach to conservation in the 21st Century. We’re working closely with all groups involved with the use of skins, mainly the royal family and the Shembe church, to come to a solution together that works for all parties.”

“Having an exhibition highlighting different interpretations of the beauty and allure of the leopard we hope will motivate people to help our film, which is working to preserve this beautiful species.” adds Greg Lomas.

The fundraiser combines an exhibition with performances from Thomas Krane, Aiden Cornhill and The Trees. Artworks, each created around the theme of 'leopard', have been donated from a number of artists, illustrators and photographers from around the country and will be on sale on the evening.

All artwork on the evening will be less 30% after which the gallery rates will apply from December 18. This includes work by Colwyn Thomas, Skullboy, Christian Mugnai, Faith 47, Greg Lomas, James Kydd, Lauren Fowler, Elizabeth Ann Ross, Charl Senekal, Chris Galliers, Mary-Anne Hampton and Craig Hayman.

To Skin a Cat Fundraiser takes place at the KZNSA Gallery on December 17 from 18h00 to 21h00. The R50 entrance fee will be donated to the To Skin a Cat project. Card-carrying KZNSA members are offered free entrance.

There will be extended hours for gift shopping at BUZZ Art, KZN’s festive season superstore – including a launch of exclusively commissioned ceramics by Entoceramics (retro 50’s Afrikaner tableware complete with proteas, bokke, ants and lucky beans).

The Durban Gay and Lesbian Film festival team will provide a cash bar. For more information visit www.toskinacat.org
