THE MATT SPARKLE

Former Durban artist to exhibit at Whatiftheworld Gallery in Cape Town.

Former Durban artist Jan-Henri Booyens is perhaps better known as one third of the highly acclaimed visual art collective Avant Car Guard, but solo works of his are included in the collection of the prestigious Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art in Paris.
His debut solo exhibition, The Matt Sparkle, comes to Whatiftheworld/Gallery in Cape Town this October, after showing at The Premises Gallery in Johannesburg. The modernist works in The Matt Sparkle are focused primarily on the study of non-objective idiosyncratic landscapes and are distinctly rendered on medium and large scale canvases. Booyens comments, “I rely on intuition in my working process and in the act of painting itself, with the outcome seldom being predetermined.” Disjunctive esoteric narratives contained within the work, are premised on personal social and geographic relationships – that in turn manifest an evolving visual shorthand.

Booyens has exhibited collectively on a national and international level since 2000, including New Painting at the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) in 2006. The exhibition runs until November 1. Moe information at www.whatiftheworld.com or www.mattsparkle.blogspot.com
