FAIRLAND COMPETITION

Pictured: Fairland
Amateurs and professionals invited to enter photography competition and possibly win a trip to Barcelona.

Continuum Architects and WesBank are giving keen photographers an opportunity to capture a unique view of one of South Africa’s architectural masterpieces, the new home of WesBank in Fairland, Johannesburg, as part of an innovative photography competition.

Continuum Architects beat many huge multi-national companies when it won the opportunity to design Fairland and before construction was even completed, the new Fairland Home of WesBank was already the primary talking point in business and architectural circles. The building's unique design seamlessly brings together African concepts and the texture of South Africa's economic infrastructure.

Now amateur and professional photographers have the chance of portraying their own unique view of Fairland from any angle they choose!

For Continuum Architects, which brought together some of the country’s foremost architectural practices to create the new home of WesBank, photography and design are integrally linked. They are asking photographers to focus on the essence of the design that seamlessly brings together dynamic African concepts and the texture of South Africa’s economic infrastructure.

Fairland’s exterior evokes the earthy colours of Africa through green glazing and earthy paint finishes. Vertical sunscreens adorned with potato prints are a prominent feature along the eight facades of the building in grey, green, yellow and red. The iconic structure completely overturns the stereotypical image of banks.

Photographers can shoot this innovative landmark from strategic vantage points in the vicinity or register to work from the grounds on selected days during January and February.

The closing date for the Continuum WesBank Photography Competition is February 20, 2009. The winning photographer will snap up a trip for two to Barcelona (including flights and accommodation), one of the world’s greatest architectural showcases. Ten runners up will each take home R1,500.

The prestigious panel of judges includes Mike Pawley, a specialist in architectural photography who was Continuum Architect’s professional photographer for the Fairland building, Michael Doran, one of South Africa’s most talented stills photographers and Doreen Pfeiffer, who specialises in producing black and white artworks for the residential and commercial market.
