(Maestro Emil Tabakov)
The penultimate concert of the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra’s World Symphony Series Summer Season 2011 takes to the Durban City Hall stage on March 10.
Acclaimed South African pianist, Christopher Duigan opens the evening with Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5. His international performances include the London and Edinburgh Festival and his CDs are aired regularly on ClassicFM in Johannesburg. The majestic work that he will perform includes one of Beethoven’s memorable slow movements, followed by a rousing finale.
Maestro Emil Tabakov, who made his debut with the orchestra this season, takes to the podium to lead the orchestra for the second week. A graduate of the Bulgarian State Music Academy, Tabakov was previously Artistic Director of the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra and the Artistic Director of the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra.
The all Beethoven programme ends with the monumental Symphony No. 3, which revolutionised the symphonic literature and set the stage for Beethoven’s future musical requests. To enrich the concert experience there will be a pre-concert talk by Ted Brien at the Royal Hotel at 18h15 on the night of the concert.
On March 17, the KZNPO concludes its Summer 2011 season in a concert that promises big-scale performances of Handel’s Water Music Suite No 2 and Bach’s Magnificat, featuring Lwazi Ncube (soprano), Nozuko Teto (soprano), Ntokozo Mhlongo (mezzo-soprano), Mhlonishwa Dlamini (tenor), Mthunzi Nokubeka (bass-baritone) and the combined forces of the Clermont Community, Durban Symphonic and Durban Chamber Choirs. The orchestra will also launch its World Symphony Series Winter Season at this concert and there will be a function after the concert.
The KZNPO concerts take place at 19h30 in the Durban City Hall with bookings through Computicket on 083 915 8000. Safe and subsidised parking is available at the Royal Hotel on concert nights.
