IKUSASA LETHU

The African Music Project presents Ikusasa Lethu, the touring ensemble of African Music and Dance students under the artistic direction of Dr. Patricia Achieng Opondo. On August 10, they will perform highlights from the Canadian Tour in July and a preview of their tour to Peru in August 2011.

These students are true ambassadors of the South African music and dance heritage and provide a showcase for the University’s mission as a Centre of African excellence. They did exceptionally well during the Canada tour performing at Festival 500 and at the Welcome Reception of the 41st International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM) World Conference in St. John’s Newfoundland, Canada. They also gave a well-received workshop on Zulu music and dance during a shared programme with the Soundshift Festival which was running concurrent with the ICTM conference. The team deserves to be congratulated for stellar performances at Bowring Park, The Rooms and Delta Hotel and for a workshop at Memorial University.

The ensemble is off to Peru in a week’s time to participate in the XXIX International Dance Festival - Festidanza hosted by the Arequipa Municipality, Peru. Ikusasa Lethu will perform in a 7,500 capacity coliseum along with other international groups.

Ikusasa Lethu performs at Howard College Theatre on August 10 at 19h30. More information from Dr Patricia Opondo on 031 260 1045.
