The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music welcomes back talented Cape Town vocalist, Sandile Gontsana.
Gontsana was born in Gugulethu Township and his uncle is the late great South African jazz drummer and UKZN alumnus, Lulu Gontsana. Sandile has completed both undergraduate and postgraduate study in jazz voice(cum laude) at the University of Cape Town and was a member of the legendary UCT Big Band and vocal ensemble during his time there. He performs with his own band in Cape Town, the Sandile Gontsana band. His international achievements include performances in Spain in 2008 as part of a Motown tribute show, and at the World University Beach Concert in China in 2011.
Gontsana auditioned successfully in 2010 and 2011 for his place as the vocalist in the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band which had two extremely successful performances at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival in Johannesburg.
Sandile Gontsana (vocals) will be accompanied by Durban musicians Sibusiso Mashiloane (piano/keys) of Unlocked Keys, Thuto Motsemme (bass) and well-loved Paki Peloele (drums)
The performance takes place on March 14 at 18h00 (doors opens at 17h30) at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM), Level 2, Shepstone, at the University of KwaZulu-Natal Howard College Campus.
