DIVINE SHAPES

(Shri Manesh Maharaj)

The Kala Darshan Institute of classical music and dance will stage Divine Shapes – a Kathak performance by Shri Manesh Maharaj and his students on May 12 in Chatsworth.

Divine Shapes takes the audience on a unique journey exploring temple sculpture, miniature paintings and Mughal architecture through the medium of dance. Originating in the temples of Northern India, Kathak was once a medium of worship. It entered the courtrooms of the great Mughal emperors where it developed into a highly stylised classical dance form. Intricate rhythm, fast-paced pirouettes and complex footwork heightened its visual appeal.

Reliving the great feats that Kathak dancers reached during the Mughal reign, Divine Shapes showcases its technical brilliance where the dancers execute a total of 108 pirouettes in one take. The competitive spirit inherent in Kathak is highlighted through Jugalbandi where the dancers engage in rhythmic dialogue in an attempt to supersede the other.

The Kala Darshan Institute was established in 1999 with the aim to preserve and propagate the rich cultural heritage of classical music and dance in South Africa. Yearly programmes are staged where students are afforded the opportunity to showcase their talents before a live audience. Through these programmes, Kala Darshan has assisted numerous cultural and non-governmental organisations raise funds for their respective projects. Some of these organisations include the Ramakrishna Centre of SA, The Aryan Benevolent Homes, The Chinmaya mission of SA, The Dudlu project for underprivileged woman, The Saraswathie Cultural Society (Phoenix), The Shri Vishnu temple (Chatsworth) etc.

Divine Shapes promises to captivate and enthral a diverse audience with its rich music score, vibrant choreography and exquisite costumes. It will take place on May 12, at the Rajput Hall in Chatsworth at 19h00. Tickets R50 at the door prior to the performance. Proceeds will be donated to various religious organisations.
