A SOLDIER’S STORY

(Howard E Rollins)

Directed by Norman Jewison (1984), A Soldier’s Story is an exceptional drama. Set during World War II, it was nominated for three Oscars®, including best picture. An African-American captain played by Howard E Rollins, Jr (In the Heat of the Night, All My Children) is assigned to an all-black army post in Louisiana to investigate the brutal murder of a sergeant. As the investigation unfolds, it becomes clear that this was no ordinary bigotry-fuelled killing – and that racial identity and prejudice runs more than just skin deep.

A potentially polarising theme is handled with class and finesse in this fine film. Look out for a young Denzel Washington (The Bone Collector, Malcolm X) in one of his earliest film roles.

A Soldier's Story airs on March 6 at 20.00 Sony Entertainment Television DStv Channel 127.
