(Lisa
Bobbert, Liesl Coppin and Marion Loudon)
Absolute charmers have put together a show
which is funny, light hearted and very entertaining. (Review by Keith Millar)
The
Glitter Girls: Reunion of ’89 has four more performances at
Rhumbelow Theatre this coming weekend.
The Glitter Girls are Lisa Bobbert, Liesl
Coppin and Marion Loudon. Three of Durban’s most loved and versatile
performers. Together they are a formidable force who light up the stage and
have the audience eating out of the palms of their hands.
Twenty four years after leaving
Skolliesburg High School, the class of 1989 are finally getting to celebrate
their 20 year reunion (on account of the organiser Tina Davis having somehow
misplaced the years 2002 to 2005).
That means that the Glitter Girls are going
back. Back to the days of spandex, big hair and co-ordinated dance moves. They
will relive some of their greatest triumphs, heartbreaks and romances. They
will see many old friends and the boys they fancied from afar - including three
wild and wacky characters they introduce to the audience. They also hear the
voices of some of their old teachers, (voice provided by Aaron McIlroy) which
are used as hilarious links between scenes.
The girls sing many of the great hits of
the era and a few from today. Expect music from Madonna, Pink, Rihanna, Bonnie
Tyler, Cindy Lauper, Alison Moyet, Wham, The Eurtythmics, Abba and Duran Duran,
amongst others.
All three are talented singers and dancers
and they present these songs with energy and dynamism. All three are also
natural comics and, led by Bobbert, they keep the audience in stitches
throughout the show in a hilarious and irrepressible performance.
The Rhumbelow Supper Theatre is an intimate
venue and is ideal for a production such as this where the audience are very
much part of the action. As is often the case with this format of show, the
front row is for the brave only.
Bobbert, Coppin and Loudon are absolute
charmers – all three are previous recipients of the coveted The Mercury Durban
Theatre Personality of the Year award – and they have put together a show which
is funny, light hearted and very entertaining.
The
Glitter Girls: Reunion of ’89 will be on at The Rhumbelow Theatre from the November 1 to 3. Shows
on Friday and Saturday at 20h00 and on Sunday at 14h00 and 18h30. Tickets R100
pp.
The venue opens 90 minutes before show for
picnic dinner. Bring food picnic baskets and braais will be available for those
who wish to cook some meat. A cash bar is available (no alcohol may not be
brought on to the premises). There is limited secure parking.
