The Drama and Performance Studies programme of the
University of KwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg will present the first of this
year’s season of Post Graduate New Directors’ Plays.
“When men are oppressed, it’s a tragedy. But when women are
oppressed it’s tradition!”
For Women of Colour is based on the stories
of four South African women who are facing some form of oppression by the community,
employers and even family. Through the use of storytelling and music, the
director and writer, Terece Swartz, explores the stories of these particular
women and the different types of oppression they come up against. Through their
stories the play also reveals how they learn to deal with their circumstances
as black women living in today’s demanding society, and poses the question “Can
women indulge in freedom?”
For Women of Colour has performances on April 23 and 24 at
18h00 at the Hexagon Studio Theatre, UKZN, Pietermaritzburg. Tickets R20 at the
door.
